California, also known as The Golden State, is one of the Pacific states in the continental United States of America and is the third largest in the country. It is the largest state by population, with nearly over 40 million residents.
California's capital city is Sacramento. The state's most populous city is Los Angeles, which is also the country's most populous, after New York City. The Greater Los Angeles region and the San Francisco Bay Area are the nation's second- and fifth-most populous urban regions, with nearly over 19 million and 9 million residents respectively.
California is borded to the north by Oregon, to the east by Arizona, to the southeast by Nevada, to the west by the Pacific Coast, and to the south by the Mexican state of Baja California.
10,000 years prior to the European expeditions during the 16th and 17th centuries, California was inhabited by numerous Indigenous Califorinians. The now-disestablished Spanish Empire claimed the land as part of Alta California in their New Spain colony.
