― Corey to Laurie in Halloween Ends (2022)

Corey Cunningham is the secondary antagonist of Halloween Ends, final part of Halloween saga.

Released on charges of manslaughter for accidentally killing a boy he babysat in 2019, Corey becomes the town pariah. Laurie Strode is sympathetic towards him, and attempts to romantically link him with her 21-year-old granddaughter, Allyson, a nurse.

Later, Corey is revealed to have a darker and more sinister nature. After encountering Michael Myers, they lock eyes. He then personifies Evil. No longer is he unassured, but confident and reckless, culminating in a third and final killing spree in Haddonfield.

He is portrayed by Canadian actor Rohan Campbell.

Biography[]

Background[]

Corey was born in 1998. He was raised by his overbearing mother, Joan Cunningham and a stepfather Ronald.

Halloween night, 2019[]

Corey is hired to babysit a boy named Jeremy. However, Jeremy dislikes Corey for being boring. After leaving for a minute before putting Jeremy to bed, the boy disappears.

He searches for the boy. However, Jeremy is actually pulling a prank on Corey, and locks him in the attic. Corey's anxieties rise, causing him to kick the door down brutally.

Corey Kills Jeremy

Corey watches over Jeremy's dead body.

His parents come home right before they hear him say "I'm gonna kill you, Jeremy!". After a few kicks, the door busts open but Jeremy is revealed to have been standing right in front of the door.

The hit is so violent that Jeremy flies above the guardrail and falls three stores to his death, leaving his parents shocked and devastated. This accident haunts Corey for the rest of his life, as well as Jeremy's parents.

Three years later[]

Corey is acquitted of manslaughter. However, this has led to his bullying amongst the townspeople. He is harassed by high school students, causing Laurie Strode to intervene. She later introduces him to her granddaughter, Allyson to treat his injuries sustained from his physical assault.

Laurie Bonding with Corey

Laurie aids Corey in revenge against the high school bullies.

Despite initially taking a liking to him, Laurie senses Corey's Evil after he has secretly locked eyes with Michael Myers, who has been lurking in the sewers for an indeterminate amount of time.

After expressing her skepticism of Corey, Allyson protests. She and Corey have developed a stronger relationship after his encounter with the Shape. He is much more confident, reckless, and aggressive, however. Later, he overpowers a weakened Michael Myers and steals his mask.

Corey Cunningham as The Shape

Corey as The Shape.

When Laurie reports a suicide in her home, she is aware Corey is following her. However, it is a trap. They have a standoff which culminates in a frantic Corey stabbing himself in the neck to frame her for his murder, in order for an arriving Allyson to hate her grandmother once and for all.

Despite this, Michael Myers' attack leads Allyson to discern what has really happened eventually. Then, Michael snaps Corey's neck after they re-lock eyes, and his strength is regained as the Shape as a result.

In the epilogue, Laurie determines Evil cannot die, it just reshapes.

Trivia[]

  • Corey is the fifth major character villain in the Halloween franchise, following Michael Myers, Conal Cochran (from the stand-alone anthology), Terence Wynn/The Man in Black and Dr. Ranbir Sartain.
  • The character of Corey is an evident reference to Arnie Cunningham, a similarly tragic character (a nice young man who turns to evil because of bullying and a mystical evil figure).
  • His costume as The Shape is inspired by Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4 (1988), who was also alluded to taking on the mantle before this was discarded and retconned in Halloween 5 (1989).
  • Conal Cochran, a character in Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) is also paid homage in the character of Corey. Halloween Ends (2022) was also released exactly 40 years later, with a similar blue font inspired by the anthology film.
  • Elements of his character is also an homage to the creator of the Halloween saga, John Carpenter, director of Christine (1983).
  • He is similar to Roy Burns from the Friday the 13th franchise. Both were copycat killers of their franchises' respected antagonists (Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees respectively). The only difference being that Roy became a killer after Jason "died", while Corey did the same but Michael was still active.
