Film[]
At the start of the film, DJ Walters witnesses Horace Nebbercracker chasing off a little girl and confiscating her tricycle. His parents, who are going to a dentist's convention, don't share his suspicions about Nebbercracker's house, nor does his best friend, Chowder. While playing basketball with Chowder, his ball inadverently ends up on Nebbercracker's lawn; Nebbercracker catches DJ trying to reclaim the ball and gives him an earful; while doing so, he suddenly has a heart attack and faints on top of him. As Nebbercracker is put in an ambulance and taken to the hospital, DJ gets the impression that he killed Nebbercracker.
That evening, DJ gets phone calls from Nebbercracker's house, but no answer. Getting the feeling that Nebbercracker is haunting him, DJ calls Chowder and asks for his help; as he sneaks out, he overhears his babysitter Zee and her boyfriend Bones talking, with Bones reflecting on how Nebbercracker took his kite away from him when he was a kid. Meeting up with Chowder at a construction site, the two boys stake out the house. However, the naive Chowder disagrees, goes up to the house and rings the doorbell, causing the house to come alive and attack the boys. Running back to DJ's house, they spend the night watching the house.
The next day, Halloween, DJ and Chowder are infatuated by a young red-haired girl, Jenny Bennett, as she goes door to door selling Halloween candy; much to their horror, she sets her sights on Nebbercracker's house. They run out to warn her, and save her from being the house's breakfast. Going up to DJ's bedroom, the three start to get to know each other; Jenny calls her mother, and then the police, but neither believe her about the house being haunted.
The youthful trio then speak to Reginald Skullinski, who tells them that he's heard rumors about human spirits possessing man-made structures, and to defeat the house, they have to destroy its heart. Realizing the heart is the furnace, which began burning when Nebbercracker was taken to the hospital, DJ, Chowder, and Jenny concoct a plan to infiltrate the house, which involves stealing cold medicine from Chowder's dad's pharmacy and putting it in a dummy to feed to the house, putting it to sleep long enough for them for to enter it and extinguish the furnace.
Just when it looks like the plan is about to succeed, the police return and place the kids under arrest. Hearing strange sounds coming from the house, the officers go up to investigate, resulting in both of them getting eaten. The house then proceeds to eat their car; however, the kids are able to escape, but are now trapped inside. Exploring the house, they find a huge collection of toys that Nebbercracker confiscated from children over the years in the basement, as well as the remains of his wife, Constance. The house senses they are inside, forcing them to escape.
Feeling the plan was a waste of time, DJ decides to call it quits. At that moment, Nebbercracker returns home by ambulance, leading DJ, Chowder, and Jenny to realize that it's actually Constance's spirit that's controlling the house. Nebbercracker then recounts his past, and explains the reason for his child-hating attitude: he was trying to ensure kids wouldn't get hurt by his house.
DJ urges Nebbercracker to let Constance go, which angers her to the point that she uproots the house and goes after the four of them. Fleeing to the construction site, Nebbercracker tries, and fails, to blow the house up with dynamite, leading him to ask DJ to do it on his behalf. Chowder mans an excavator and keeps the house occupied while DJ and Jenny ascend a crane. At the top, DJ is too scared to go on the crane, but Jenny reassures him that he can do it and gives him a kiss. Using the crane, DJ throws the dynamite down the chimney and into the furnace, obliterating the house.
Witnessing Nebbercracker with Constance's spirit before she goes to heaven, DJ approaches the tearful Nebbercracker and apologizes for the loss of his house-wife, but Nebbercracker gives DJ, Chowder, and Jenny his eternal gratitude for freeing them from 45 years of entrapment. Back at the grounds of his house, the four return all the toys to the neighborhood kids. Jenny's mom, Alison Bennett, arrives to bring her home; before leaving, Jenny promises to get together with DJ Nebbercracker and Chowder again. The two boys bid farewell to Nebbercracker, then meet up with DJ's parents (who have just returned). DJ and Chowder both agree that they're too old for trick-or-treating. However, DJ, considering everything they've just been through, decides to go trick-or-treating to unwind and make Chowder feel better.
