David McGowan is a character in the 1995 remake of "Village of the Damned."

Background[]

After a "blackout" was caused by an unknown alien life force, ten women in the town of Midwich, California mysteriously became pregnant. One of them was David's mother, Jill McGowan whose husband, Frank McGowan died in a truck crash during the "blackout." Nine months later, David, along with the other children, are born at the same time in the town barn, but one of the girls is stillborn. Dr. Susan Verner takes her lifeless body away, and she even tells Reverend George that she sent it for an autopsy.

Later, when the children paired up like mates, David walked behind the group by himself. It turned out that the stillborn baby was meant to be David's future partner. As a result of this loss, David became more human by learning to understand empathy. He even tried to look for her at the cemetery, and he saw Dr. Alan Chaffee visiting his late wife's grave. He told Alan: "She was to be with me. We were to be together." Alan was shocked, and David even held his hand while looking at his late wife's grave. Alan later spoke to Jill about it, and she told him that she never told David about the stillborn baby. At one point, while visiting the cemetery, David saw Melanie Roberts, the mother of the stillborn baby drinking alcohol, and David saw thoughts of her putting a pistol inside her mouth and pulling the trigger. Later, Melanie committed suicide.

Mara, Alan's daughter and the group's leader told David that without a partner he was less important, and his emotions were disturbing. Mara and her future partner, Robert eventually used their mental powers to force Dr. Verner to show them the stillborn baby, and it turned out that Dr. Verner secretly kept her in her laboratory for scientific research. David is devastated at the sight of her well-preserved alien corpse, and Mara and Robert use their mental powers to force Dr. Verner to stab herself to death with a scalpel.

Alan later decided to get rid of the children by using a bomb hidden inside a briefcase, but Jill begged him to spare David, because he wasn't like the others, and he agreed. The children sense that he's hiding something, and Jill eventually arrives, and David breaks free from the group by knocking Mara down to the floor when they try to kill his mother. Alan then yells at David and Jill to leave the building. Mara used all of her mental strength to break through her father's mental wall, and her alien appearance started showing. The children then see the bomb and look at the clock. The bomb exploded, killing everyone, including Alan.

While driving away, Jill says: "Don't worry, David. We'll go someplace where nobody knows who we are." David looked into the distance, facing an uncertain future, but free of Mara and the other children.
