Demon Bear is the main antagonist in the 2020 superhero horror film The New Mutants and is based on the Marvel comics character of the same name. It is a physical manifestation of Dani Moonstar's deepest fears and insecurities, which comes into the real world as a product of her mutant powers emerging.
History[]
As Dani Moonstar is sleeping, the Demon Bear appears and rips through her reservation, killing everyone and ripping through their homes with it's giant claws, all while disguised in a swirling storm of darkness and surrounded by a snowy setting. Dani tries to flee with her father but it chases after them and kills him by slashing him across the chest and throwing him through the woods. It then disappears as she falls unconscious.
The Demon Bear appears once again, larger than ever as Dr. Cecilia Reyes is about to kill Dani. It burst through the building and mauls Reyes to death, throwing her around before crushing her between it's teeth. It then tries to kill Dani, who is trapped in a dream state, but her friends carry her out. Illyana powers up and fights it off while telling them to get to safety. She, and her dragon Lockheed, fight with the Demon Bear, slashing it multiple times with her flaming sword but it doesn't stop it.
Sam also using his powers to fend it off but is knocked down every time by it's giant size. Even Roberto tries to protect Dani but is crushed beneath it's paw. Rahne tries to hold it back as it sets it's sights on Dani, but is overpowered and is almost killed when Dani wakes up. She talks to the Demon Bear calmly and manages to stop it's rage by telling it that "everything is gonna be okay. You don’t have to worry about anything anymore. But it’s time to go to sleep now." - and in-turn, resolves her own fears and insecurities which causes the Demon Bear to vanish.
