Detective Winn is the deuteragonist of the 2008 teen slasher film Prom Night. He is a seasoned detective who was responsible for taking down Richard Fenton after he murdered the parents and 11-year-old brother of Donna Keppel. Three years later and Fenton is now on the loose, prompting Winn to use every means necessary to protect Donna.
He was portrayed by Idris Elba.

Detective Winn was the officer in charge of brining in Richard Fenton. Donna Keppel reported her parents murdered after witnessing the brutal attack of her mother in her home while she hid under the bed, after he had already slaughtered her father and younger brother. Winn arrested Fenton in his home, where he found a journal in which he had written about his fantasies with Donna, as well as pictures of her scattered everywhere. Despite a solid case with plenty of evidence, the jury deemed that Fenton was clinically insane and could not face the death penalty, much to the anger of Winn and so he was locked up for life.
Three years have passed and Winn has gotten a fax about an escaped prisoner, Richard Fenton. Winn immediately calls the criminal asylum where he was being held and demanded answers, they told him he escaped three days ago after killing another inmate and distracting the guards. Winn, furious, slams the phone done and immediately goes with his partner, Detective Nash to warn Donna.
Winn arrives at Donna's Aunt's house where he informs her and her husband of Fenton's release. They are distraught but all decide to allow Donna to enjoy her prom as he has not been spotted near the area and could have fled the state. Either way, Winn and Nash go to the hotel where the prom is being held to look out for Donna in-case he shows up.
while at the prom venue, he gets word of a stolen car of a missing man that has been reported in the car park of the hotel. He opens the boot and sees the owner dead, indicating that Fenton is already here. Winn rushes inside and gets information about Fenton's check-in under the deceased mans name and his room number. Winn barges inside and sees the dead body of a hotel maid to which he immediately decides to evacuate the hotel and therefore flush out Fenton.
He is unsuccessful and goes back upstairs where he runs into a screaming Donna who has managed to escape Fenton. Winn sends her home with Nash to keep watch over her at her Aunt's house while he searches up and down for Fenton. Winn finds the dead bodies of Donna's friends but no sign of Winn. He sees blood coming from an air vent and finds the body of a hotel concierge, stripped of his uniform. He deduces that Fenton escaped while disguised as a staff member and calls Nash to secure Donna.
Winn arrives to find Nash with his throat slashed and the phone lines cut. He searches the house and walks right into Fenton about to plunge a blade into Donna, he fires multiple bullets and kills him. Donna rushes to Winn and he hugs her as she is frantic. He comforts her and tells her it's over.
