England is a country and part of the greater United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west; the Irish Sea is to the north west, the Celtic Sea to the south west and the North Sea to the east, with the English Channel to the south separating it from continental Europe. The mainland of England consists of the central and southern part of the island of Great Britain in the North Atlantic, but England also includes over 100 smaller islands such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight.
With over 53 million residents, England's population comprises 84% of the United Kingdom's population. England's capital and largest city is London, with over 8 million residents.
In terms of the horror genre, England was the home of Bray Studios, which produced most of the original Hammer Horror films of the 1950s-70s. Bray Studios is located next to the River Thames at Water Oakley in the civil parish of Bray, near Windsor in the English county of Berkshire.
Etymology[]
The word "England" comes from the Old English name Englaland, which means "home of the Angles" or "land of the Angles". The Angles were a Germanic tribe that settled in Great Britain during the Early Middle Ages (the 5th and 6th centuries). This tribe came from Angeln peninsula in the Bay of Kiel bay of the Baltic Sea.
