Biography[]
Early life[]
In 1462, Gabriel Van Helsing encountered and killed Count Vladislaus Dracula.
Journey to Transylvania[]
In 1888, after killing the Mr. Hyde at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, Van Helsing returned to the Vatican in Rome where he was tasked with helping the last of an ancient Romanian bloodline, Velkan and Anna Valerious, who intended to kill Dracula so that their ancestors could enter Heaven. Carl, a friar, provided Van Helsing with aid and weapons. Van Helsing and Carl then journeyed to Transylvania where they met Anna. Shortly after, they were attacked by Dracula's brides. After some conflict, Van Helsing saved Anna and killed Marishka, one of the brides.
Reunion with Dracula[]

Van Helsing encounters Dracula for the first time in centuries.
In order to protect Anna, Van Helsing knocked her out to prevent her from leaving. She awakened that night and encountered Velkan, who revealed that Dracula had a dark secret, but to her horror, he became a werewolf, having been bitten by the one that he had encountered. Anna and Van Helsing then tracked him to Frankenstein's castle and discovered that the vampires were attempting to give life to their born-dead children, using Velkan as the source of the power. Van Helsing, called "Gabriel" by Dracula, realized they had ties in the past. Van Helsing refused Dracula's offer to return his memory and escaped, with Dracula's experiment failing.
Van Helsing and Anna soon encountered Frankenstein's monster and because he was not evil, Van Helsing could not allow him to be killed, even though he claimed to be key to Dracula's experiment. Velkan witnessed the conversation and escaped to inform Dracula. Meanwhile, Carl discovered a painting that came to life, depicting a werewolf and a vampire battling. The group traveled by carriage to Budapest, luring the remaining brides into a trap and killing Verona. Velkan ambushed and bit Van Helsing before being killed. Anna was then captured and held as a bargaining chip in exchange for Frankenstein's monster.
Stopping Dracula and Finding a Cure[]

Van Helsing mourns the loss of Anna.
Although he was briefly hidden in a crypt, he was taken by the count's undead underlings while Van Helsing and Carl rescued Anna. Returning to the Valerious' castle, Carl discovered an inscription and created a doorway to the Dracula's castle. After failing to free Frankenstein's monster from his imprisonment, he let them know of a cure to lycanthropy that Dracula possessed. Carl determined that the bite of the werewolf was the only way to kill Dracula. He and Anna took Igor to find the cure while Van Helsing went to free Frankenstein's monster. Igor escaped while the final bride, Aleera, beat Anna. Carl then tried to deliver the cure to Van Helsing. Igor confronted Carl on a bridge, but the confrontation send Igor falling to his demise. Frankenstein's monster saved Anna and urged her to help Carl and Van Helsing. Anna killed Aleera and arrived at the castle. As a werewolf, Van Helsing battled Dracula and, despite the vampire's attempts to reason with him, managed to bite him, causing him to dissolve into a skeleton. Anna arrived and was accidentally killed by Van Helsing as she injected him with the cure. After narrowly stopping Carl from killing him, Van Helsing returned to normal, stricken with grief over what he had done.

Van Helsing and Carl ride into the sunset.
In the aftermath of Dracula's defeat, on a cliff with a view of the sea, Van Helsing and Carl paid their respects to Anna with a funeral pyre. As he and Carl mourned the loss of Anna, Van Helsing looked up to the clouds and witnessed the spirits of Anna and her family ascending into the afterlife while nearby, Frankenstein's monster rowed away on a raft out to sea. Afterwards, Van Helsing put his hat back on and then rode off into the sunset with Carl.
