Italy (Italian: Italia); officially known as the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica italiana) is a unitary parliamentary republic in Europe and part of the European Union. It is located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. With around 61 million residents, Italy is the fourth most populous EU member state. The country's capital city is Rome, which is also the country's largest city as well.

Italy is borded to the north by Switzerland, to the west by France, and to the east by Austria and Slovenia.

The Italian wolf

The Italian wolf (Canis lupis italicus), is a prominent animal in Latin and Italian cultures, including the legend of the founding of Rome.

Italy is the most faunal biodiverse nation in all of Europe, with over 57,000 animal species recorded and 4,777 of them being endemic; including the Sardinian red deer, the brown cave salamander, the Italian newt, the Sicilian wall lizard, the Sicilian pond turtle, and the Italian Aesculapian snake. 102 of the animal species are mammals, such as the Marsican brown bear, the Alpine marmot, the crested porcupine, the European snow vole, and most significantly, the Italian wolf, the country's national animal.
