Mass State Lottery is an upcoming 2024 American crime, horror comedy film written and directed by Jay Karales, professionally known as comedian and experimental filmmaker LowRes Wünderbred.[1] Starring Jay Karales, Hans Lam Barboza, Nicholas Goroff, Yuna Kim, Buddy Duress, Sheila Ball, Austin Wright, Kenney Dorcely, and Jake Hanrahan.

Plot[]

A private investigator manipulates a grieving mother to save his dying business and stumbles upon a pattern of murders.

The film is inspired by Boston cases in the smiley face murder theory.

Filming[]

The film's principle photography began in the first week of March 2020 and ran through January 2023 in Queens and Manhattan, New York, as well as Boston and Quincy, Massachusetts, and Seoul, South Korea.[2][3]

Casting[]

The principle cast of Jay Karales, Hans Lam Barboza, Jacob A. Miller, Kenney Dorcely, Thomas Speed, and Jerry Jensen - collectively known as the comedy troupe Headshot, LLC., was announced to headline the feature in early 2020.

In July 2020 journalist and Popular Front founder Jake Hanrahan was cast as conspiracy theory podcaster John Doyle.

Eric Roberts (Star 80, The Dark Knight) was initially cast as the film's antagonist, but was later dropped due to practical effects being used to physically construct the villain.

In January 2022 Buddy Duress (Good Time, PVT Chat) was announced to have signed on to play an ex-convict named Ivan. Buddy Duress would pass away in November 2023, with his death being announced by Karales and brother Michael Stathis in February 2024. Mass State Lottery is his final film.

Release[]

Mass State Lottery will be released in 2024. The first theatrical trailer was released on YouTube May 6, 2021.[4] The second theatrical trailer was released August 17, 2022 on the Forgotten Genres website.
