Massachusetts, also known as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, The Bay State, The Pilgrim State, The Puritian State, The Old Colony State, and The Baked Bean State is a state in the northeastern United States and the most populous state in the New England region of the country.
Massachusetts is bounded to the north by New Hampshire and Vermont, to the west by New York, to the south by Connecticut and Rhode Island, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The capital and largest city of the state is Boston, which is also the most populous city in New England.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony was named after the Massachusett, a Native American tribe. The word Massachusett is presumably derived from a Wopanaak word muswach8sut.
