Psycho II is a 1983 American psychological horror film directed by Richard Franklin and written by Tom Holland. It is the sequel to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.
Plot[]
22 years after the first film, Norman Bates is released from the mental hospital by an insanity defense. As Norman walks out of the courtroom, he is approached by Lila Loomis, the sister of Marion Crane. Lila argues that he shouldn't be released, since he can still murder people.
Norman's doctor, Raymond, takes him back to the Bates Motel. At the motel, Norman sees his mother peering at him through a window, but Raymond tells him that he's seeing things. Raymond leaves, and Norman explores the house. He hears his mother's voice and has a flashback to the time where he killed her with poison.
The next day, he travels to his new job, a local diner called Statler's Cafe. He meets one of the cooks, Emma Spool. Mrs. Spool introduces Norman to the head chef Ralph, and the waitresses Mary and Myrna. Mary is constantly yelled at by Ralph. Though when she accidentally drops a plate, Norman takes the blame.
Later that night, Mary breaks up with her boyfriend, who she had been living with, making her homeless. Norman invites Mary to stay at his motel, and Mary trusts him since he saved her earlier. Back at the motel, Norman meets the new manager, Toomey. Toomey converted the motel into a drug haven. Norman then immediately fires Toomey for allowing drugs. Even though Norman tells Mary that she is not allowed to go into mother's room, she insists to sleep in there.
The next day, Toomey arrives at Statler's diner. He harasses Mary and Norman. After Norman sees a note that imitates his mother's, he snaps. He yells at Toomey, accidentally burning Ralph's arms in the process. Toomey leaves and Norman is dismissed. That night, Mary returns to the motel, needing a room once again. Mary takes a shower, not noticing a peephole. Norman is harassed by Toomey again, who throws dirt at his window. Later, Toomey's cheeks are sliced open with a knife by an unseen figure.
The next morning, Norman quits his job at the diner, preparing to manage the motel again. Dr. Raymond arrives at the motel and talks to Norman. Norman explains that someone has been calling him, claiming to be his mom. Meanwhile, Mary notices the peephole. She goes downstairs to confront Norman and Raymond, and quickly forgets about the peephole. Dr. Raymond leaves and drops Mary off in town. He goes to the local police station to discuss the strange calls Norman was receiving. The sheriff, John Hunt, arrested Norman 22 years ago, and he explains that the anonymous caller must be trying to drive Norman insane again.
Meanwhile, Norman repaints the motel when he suddenly sees his mother. He wonders into the attic, where someone locks him inside. While Norman is trapped, two teenagers sneak into Norman's basement to smoke marijuana. They hear footsteps appear and the boy notices a woman dresses in black. The woman charges towards them. Even though the girl is able to escape, the boy is stabbed in the back multiple times.
Later, Mary returns to the motel and helps Norman out of the room. They suddenly hear a knock at the door. They go down stairs only to see Sheriff Hunt and his partner Deputy Pool. They are here since the teenage boy's girlfriend reported the murder. Norman allows them to check the house, but they are unable to find any proof of a murder. When asked about where they were that afternoon, Mary lies, saying that they were out for the walk. After the cops leave, Norman asks why Mary lied about their afternoon. Mary states that she doesn't want to rise any suspicion.
That night, it is revealed that Lila was pretending to be his mother the whole time, and that Mary is actually Lila's daughter. Even though Lila is still trying to drive Norman insane, Mary thinks that he's already perfectly sane. Later, Norman and Mary finds a bloody towel in the bathroom. Norman concludes that he must have murdered the teenager and that he's going insane again. Mary calms him down, assuring him that he's fine. Mary sees someone looking through the peephole. When she goes up to it, she finds someone staring back at her. Norman runs upstairs after hearing Mary scream. Norman comes to the conclusion that he never murdered his mother, and that his mother is the one who has been murdering more people.
The next day, Dr. Raymond warns Norman that Mary is actually Lila's daughter. Later that day, mother's grave is dug up. The body is still inside the casket, proving that she is dead. That night, Mary sees Norman talking on the phone with his mother. Mary believes that it's just Lila, trying to drive Norman insane, but when she listens closely, she finds out that no one's on the line.
The next day, Toomey's body is discovered in a swamp, the same swamp Norman used to hide Marion's body. Meanwhile, Lila attempts to scare Norman again, only to be impaled through the mouth with a knife. Mary rushes back to the motel, only to see Norman descending into madness. In a last ditch attempt, Mary dresses up as Norman's mother to control him. While trying to call Norman from upstairs, she is suddenly attacked, she grabs a knife and stabs the attacker, only to find out that it was Dr. Raymond. Raymond falls down to the first floor, right in front of Norman. Norman looks up and sees Mary dressed up as his mother. Norman thinks that it's his mother who murdered everyone. While Norman attempts to take the knife from Mary's hands, he is stabbed in various places. Just before Mary kills Norman, Sheriff Hunt appears and shoots Mary, killing her.
The police concluded that Lila and Mary murdered people around Norman, to drive him insane and to frame him, but an argument broke out causing the death by Lila. Norman is sent back to the motel after receiving some stitches. He is visited by Emma Spool, who is revealed to be Norman's biological mother. When Norman was born, she wasn't able to raise Norman. So her sister, Norma, raised him instead. Norman, finally meeting his real mother, murders Spool with a shovel. He holds her body up into her room, preserving her like he did to Norma in the original. The film ends with Norman, promising his mother that he'll re-open the motel very soon.
