R.J. MacReady is a character created by John Carpenter and is the Protagonist of The Thing. He was portrayed by Kurt Russell.
Biography[]
Before The Film[]
Not alot is known about MacReady prior to the events of The Thing. However he formerly served as a military chopper pilot during the Vietnam War prior to the events of the film. At some point he served as a test pilot for Hughes Aircraft, before resigning due to conflicts with the management team. He eventually became stationed at US Outpost 31.
The Thing[]
After a Norwegian helicopter perusing an Alaskan Malamute lands outside US Outpost 31, the Pilot Matias is killed following a grenade explosion that also destroys the helicopter, while the other pilot, Lars, is shot and killed by Outpost Commander Garry. The Malamute is taken in by the dog handler Clark, meanwhile R.J along with Dr. Copper, the base's physician, fly to the Norwegian base to investigate.
