Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese for "River of January") or just Rio is a state in the southeastern region of Brazil and the third most populous in the country. It is borded by the South Atlantic Ocean to south and east.
The capital and largest city is Rio de Janeiro, which was the capital of the Portuguese Colony of Brazil from 1763 to 1815, of following United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves from 1815 to 1822 and of later independent Brazil as a republic and a kingdom from 1822 to 1960.
Although the third most populous state in Brazil, it is one of smallest in the country by area.

According to the last PNAD (National Household Survey) census, 54% (about 8 million) of Rio de Janeiro is white, 34% (about 5 million) of it is Pardo (Mixed race), 12% (about nearly 2 million) of it is black, 0.2% (about 25,000) of it is Asian and 0.1% (about 19,000) of it is Amerindian.
