Sadie Harper is the main protagonist of the 2023 horror film The Boogeyman. Mourning the sudden death of her doting mother, Sadie is struggling in every aspect of her life but soon finds fear also creeping in when a malevolent presence invades her home and sets its sights on her little sister.
She was portrayed by Sophie Thatcher.
History[]
Sadie's mother suddenly died in a car accident and she is struggling to cope with the loss. Her psychiatrist father is used to keeping his own feelings in and she must care for her younger sister most of the time. One evening, while walking through her home she hears mysterious voices coming from a closet in her mother's former workroom. She opens the door and is shocked to see one of her father's patients, Lester Billins dead, having hung himself behind the door.
Police had ruled it a suicide, but Sadie isn't entirely convinced and looks into the death herself and finds a drawing he had given her father, of a monster drawn by his daughter shortly before she died. She locates Lester's address and walks inside. It's a mess, trashed throughout with a mysterious dark residue growing from the walls. Upstairs she encounters Lester's widow who tells her about the 'Boogeyman', a primordial creature that comes out in the shadows and taunts its pray for months before killing it and that it had latched onto Sadie and her family after sensing their intense grief.
Sadie, trying to reconnect with her friends invites them over one night but sees the Boogeyman herself which later attacks her sister Sawyer. Her father takes her to the hospital as Sadie is called back to the Billing's house by his widow. While at the house, Lester's widow Rita traps Sadie and tells her she is sorry but she has to use her as bait to lure the Boogeyman out to finally kill it. The Boogeyman appears and falls into a trap set by Rita and is riddled with bullets. Rita approaches, thinking it's dead but it jumps up and violently kills her. Sadie manages to free herself and runs out of the house, calling her father to tell them not to go back to the house.
It's too late and the Boogeyman has trapped them inside. Sadie arrives and finds her sister hiding in a closet wrapped in Christmas lights. Sadie goes down to the basement to rescue her father and Sawyer follows closely behind. They are attacked by the Boogeyman and Sadie is pinned down as it feed off of her fear. Sadie's father stabs it which frees Sadie from the feeding, but he is severely injured.
She uses her mother's old lighter to bring light to prevent the creature from approaching but it keeps running out of gas. Suddenly, the flame rises brighter and Sadie realises it's her mother's spirit helping her. She takes an aerosol can and combines it with the flame to set the creature ablaze.
Some time later, Sadie and her family attend group therapy and things seem brighter for them. As they leave, Sadie is called back inside by her therapist. As she returns to the room she realises it's empty and the closet door is open, which suggests the creature has returned. The therapist enters the room and Sadie closes the door,
