It is a fictionalized account of the last days of Edgar Allan Poe's life, in which the poet and author pursues a serial killer whose murders mirror those in Poe's stories.
Synopsis[]
When a mad serial killer who's using Poe's own works as his inspiration in a string of brutal murders, Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack) joins forces with a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans) to hunt the lunatic down.
After a mother and daughter are found horrifically murdered in Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes an unsettling discovery: the crime scene details resemble that of a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper. The publication, it seems, is part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack). Poe tops the list of obvious suspects, however simultaneous to his questioning by police, yet another grisly murder occurs, once more inspired by one of Poe's more popular stories. As he reaches the conclusion that a serial killer is on the prowl and is using Poe's writings as a morbid script for his gruesome rampage, Fields enlists the author's help in bringing the culprit to justice. The stakes only grow higher when it appears someone close to Poe may be in the murderer's cross-hairs, and the inventor of modern detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it's too late.
