Winifred "Wendy" Torrance is one of the three main characters of The Shining. She is the wife of Jack Torrance and the mother of Danny Torrance.
Character History[]
Wendy's husband Jack gets a job as a caretaker at the Overlook Hotel as it is closes for the winter and thus, Wendy and their son Danny move in with him. She is impressed by the sheer size of the hotel and is excited for Jack. She often spends her time caring for Danny and keeping him entertained with games and playing in the snow.
Jack, a month in, has sequestered himself in a large hall where he tries to write pages for his novel. Wendy enters to try and check in on him but he berates her and tells her never to come in if he is writing. Hurt by his blunt attitude, she quietly walks away. While walking around the hotel, she hears Jack screaming violently and rushes to his aid. Wendy wakes him up from a terrifying dream and he tells her that it involved him brutally murdering she and Jack.
As she comforts him, Danny walks in with a red, handprint mark on his neck and Wendy, thinking it was Jack, screams at him to never touch Danny again. It brings back a memory of when Jack, in anger, dislocated Danny' shoulder and Wendy doesn't trust him. Danny later tells Wendy that there's a woman in one of the hotel rooms and she was the one who grabbed him and Wendy returns to find Jack at the bar to get him to confront the woman.
Jack returns but says there was no one there and that Danny must be making it up. More time passes and Jack has become more unhinged. She tries to look for Jack and finds the hundreds of pages of his manuscript on the desk. As she looks at it, she sees every page contains the same line repeated over and over, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" - Wendy is horrified and Jack steps in. Terrified for her life, she grips hard onto the baseball bat in her hand as Jack steps towards her. He tells her he wants to bash her brains in and while on the stairs, she swings hard and hits him in the head. He falls down the stairs and is knocked unconscious.
Wendy locks him in one of the storage cupboards. She finds out he has destroyed the only vehicle out of the place and disabled the radio. Wendy lays down in bed to rest when Danny begins to chant "REDRUM" and spells it out on the bathroom door in lipstick. She wakes to see that it spells "MURDER" in the mirror. Jack, who has escaped, breaks into the apartment with an axe. She takes Danny into the bathroom and locks the door.
She manages to get him out of the window but it's too narrow for her to escape. Jack cuts through the bathroom door and Wendy screams in terror, managing to slice his hand just as he tried to unlock the door. He is distracted by the hotel chef Dick who has just driven in after being telepathically summoned by Danny. Wendy leaves the bathroom and encounters some of the ghosts of the hotel while searching for Danny, as well as Dick's dead body.
Wendy is reunited with Danny who managed to lose Jack in the maze. The two get into Dick's snowcat and drives away to safety while Jack freezes to death.Gallery[]
